Commenting on the announcement that WH Smith is to open Post Offices in 70 of its high street shops, York Outer Parliamentary Spokesperson, Cllr Madeleine Kirk, said:

"With the Government's track record, I am worried that this will be used as an excuse for yet more Post Office closures and a further reduction in services for customers.

"It will be of no comfort to people in rural areas that high street branches of WH Smith are to open Post Offices. People need to have access to a Post Office near to where they live.

"This latest gimmick will do nothing to prevent the erosion of community services which is currently taking place. I will keep a close eye on this experiment and will continue to campaign for existing Post Offices to remain open."
