Madeleine Kirk - local choice, local champion!

More Post Offices Set To Close

12.00.00am GMT Thu 15th Nov 2007

In response to an article in the York Press

'Council trio set to 'pre-empt' post office battle',

Madeleine wrote the following letter which was printed on 14th November 2007

"I was amazed at what is a hugely ironic situation - Labour Councillors opposing potential post office closures in York, which have been proposed by the Labour Government.

The Government's catastrophic policy of post office closures will lead to the erosion of communities where post offices play an important role in social contact. Closures will also greatly affect the accessibility of local services for those who rely on them, such as those in rural areas, the elderly and immobile.

It is both frustrating and absurd that it is Labour Councillors attacking the policies of their own party. Liberal Democrat Councillors will continue to oppose any closures in York in the forthcoming weeks, following the announcement at the end of this month."

Madeleine will be putting forward a motion to the next City of York Full Council opposing any more Post Office closures in York.
