As the credit crunch takes hold and the country faces a possible recession, Lib Dem campaigner for York and it's villages, Madeleine Kirk, is asking small businesses how she can help them survive. Small companies across the new York Outer constituency will receive both a letter and questionnaire over the coming weeks.

'We want to ask owners about the issues that currently affect small firms across York and the surrounding villages,' said Madeleine.

'These include their opinions on taxes, pensions, and how the current economic climate is having an affect on their income.'

'We want to give people the chance to really voice their opinions to help shape both local and national strategy.'

Meanwhile the Liberal Democrats are also reminding business owners of their policies to help them during the economic downturn. The party want to provide a business rate allowance which would automatically slice over £600 off annual rates bills for smaller firms.

'Here in York a large percentage of businesses are classed as small businesses. With the threat of recession and worries about obtaining credit, the first people to feel the pinch will be those running their own company,' said Madeleine.

'I believe small businesses are a vital part of our economy. It's important that we do what we can to help them survive.'
