Madeleine Kirk Signs Power2010 Pledge

York Outer Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate Madeleine Kirk has signed up to support the Power 2010 campaign to reform Parliament and change politics for good.

Madeleine Kirk said, "It's time to fix our broken system. In the wake of the expenses scandal more and more local people are demanding real change. I believe in making every vote count and giving power back to local people - where it belongs."

Madeleine added " The Liberal Democrats have advocated reforming our Parliamentary system for years, and we have put forward radical plans that would change politics for good."

It is already Liberal Democrat policy to:

• Replace the House of Lords with a fully elected second chamber.

• Scrap ID cards and expensive databases. These projects are illiberal, ineffective and a waste of money.

• Create a written constitution and approve it with a referendum.

• Introduce a proportional electoral system. The Liberal Democrats would ensure every vote counts by reforming the voting system to abolish safe seats and giving people the choice between people as well as parties.

The Liberal Democrats believe that the 'English votes for English laws' question should be resolved by creating a truly federal United Kingdom where the current problems are addressed in a written constitution.
