The first version of the European "e-Justice" web portal has been launched in Brussels following the informal meeting of the Justice and Internal Affairs Council, in the presence of Members of the European Parliament, European Justice Ministers, Commission Vice President Reding and organisations representing legal practitioners.

Diana met the writer and campaigner Jasvinder Sanghera in Brussels recently.

The Liberal group in the European Parliament (the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe) considers the provision for the Citizen's Initiative of the Lisbon Treaty to be a major democratic step forward and intends to make it a success.

On Wednesday in Brussels Diana spoke at the launch of the book: 'Kreppa: what we should learn from the Icelandic crisis.'

Wed 14th Jul 2010:

Diana has welcomed the announcement of legislation to waive the £175 million of backdated business rates demands that had been levied on ports businesses in the Humber sub-region.

Tue 13th Jul 2010:

Diana visited a north Lincolnshire farm today. She toured the farm (RJ and AE Godfrey near Elsham), which is a family business producing pigs and growing arable crops, before discussing a range of issues with a group of farmers over lunch.

Diana attended the Local Government Yorkshire & the Humber Annual Conference and AGM at the Royal Armouries in Leeds at the end of June. She participated in a workshop on Europe which considered a number of options for local authorities in the region as they prepare themselves for European policy changes and the abolition and changing role of Yorkshire Forward.

The prospect of Iceland becoming a new EU Member State was welcomed by Diana as the European Parliament supported a resolution dealing with Iceland's application for membership of the European Union in Strasbourg on Wednesday.

A new study of voting patterns in the European Parliament says the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) is the 'kingmaker' in the new Parliament being able to choose to form a winning majority either with the centre-right EPP or the centre-left Socialist group (S&D) along with the Greens/EFA (and sometimes GUE/NGL).

Diana welcomed pupils from St John Fisher School to Brussels recently. The pupils from the Harrogate school's 6th form toured the European Parliament building, had presentations from members of the Parliament's staff and later spoke to Diana Wallis MEP.

On Thursday June 24th North Norway European Office arranged its fourth workshop on Arctic issues: Multi Level Governance in the Arctic.

Diana met the Speaker of the Greenland Parliament, Mr. Josef Motzfeldt, in Brussels today. They discussed the ban on the trade in seal products (the implementation process of which was voted on that day in the IMCO Committee in the European Parliament), oil and gas exploitation and the future relationship between the respective Parliaments.

The European Commission, seeking to boost cross-border trade and to ensure strong rights for consumers, has convened a new expert group to propose ways to improve contract law in the European Union. The group of eighteen contract law experts, lawyers and consumer representatives met for the first time recently in Brussels.

The Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe considers that the Citizens Initiative (art.11.4) of the Lisbon Treaty is a major democratic step and is determined to make this new provision a success.

Fri 18th Jun 2010:

On Iceland's national day, Diana made a key-note speech at a seminar in Copenhagen about that country's economic difficulties and the expected news from the Council of Ministers meeting the following day that would give the green light to the opening of negotiations with Iceland to join the EU.
